Crossing the Finish Line: A Retrospective of the 2D Project

64 days ago, I started making a 2D space shooter game called Galaxy Shooter.

Today, the completed game is now available at It’s incredible to see far its come in that time.

There’s a few extra bits of polish that I completed after the last article.

  • I added a new font to the game, to add to the arcade style.
  • The more difficult enemies have a higher chance of appearing in later waves
  • All ships and shields now briefly flash when taking damage.
  • Rammer enemies now also have a flashing line, that warns the player to get out of the way.

There’s even more features I could add to make this game even better, but I’m afraid I would end up just working on this one game for the rest of my life. It’s time to say that this game is more than good enough, and move on to the next great thing.

Making this project demonstrated not only how far I’ve come as a developer, but also that there’s much more to learn. A simple 2D game like this only scratches the surface of what the Unity engine (and I) are capable of. I’m going to take a break for a day, and then we’ll be plunging right in to a new project.
